A Note from Jordan, UB’s Campus Pantry Organizer

Follow UB Campus Pantry on Instagram!
The Langsdale Library is an amazing resource for UB students. Not only do they hold events, workshops, and tutorial sessions that assist students academically, but they also have an extensive collection of resources as well as knowledgeable staff that are happy to lend a hand when it comes to helping students achieve their goals. However, successful students need more than just academic support. They also need to have basic human needs addressed-- to put it simply, students need to eat. In October of 2016, the UB Campus Pantry opened its doors to the campus community. The Campus Pantry is open to all UB students, faculty and staff and is intended to provide supplemental food as well as resources to help students become more financially stable. Since its opening, the pantry has helped over 120 individuals and has given away 1,626 pounds of food.

In addition to providing supplemental food, the Campus Pantry also sponsors financial literacy and budgeting activities to ensure students are able to focus on their academic and professional goals. This year, the Pantry aims to serve 175 customers and hope to raise and distribute at least 1,800 pounds of food for the UB Community.

If you are interested in volunteering, donating or participating in Pantry’s services please email me at Jordan.borkoski@ubalt.edu. Also make sure to keep your eyes open for opportunities to learn more about financial literacy throughout the semester! The Pantry is here for anyone who needs it. Textbooks are expensive, I know I’ve had to prioritize buying them over going grocery shopping in the past.

Please, let us help.

And before I forget, back over at Langsdale Library, I found an amazing book, Good and Cheap, that will prove to be a great resource for those on a tight food budget.  The author, Leanne Browne, even provides a free PDF of the book on her website and there’s even a Spanish version (download them here).

CAN you dig it?
I hope to meet you all soon!

Other resources students should check out:

https://www.reddit.com/r/budgetfood/

Both of these subreddits provide recipes and offer advice for saving money on food.

Good and Cheap is AMAZING! I checked it out actually because it had so many great ideas. I'll bring it back on Monday so everyone else can take a look!
