Orientation Season
Orientation season just wrapped up. All summer long, various departments on campus work together to introduce freshmen, transfer, graduate and international students to the University of Baltimore, along with new faculty and staff.
Orientation can be overwhelming. You have to remember a netID, a new password (with numbers, letters, and lots of other restrictions), which buildings are which, and how your transportation/parking situation works, all while trying to look super cool and not at all lost. (Here's the campus map for reference). Talk about information overload!
But if its any reassurance, by next semester, it'll all be an old hat. You'll know that you can only get to the gym in the Academic Center by using the stairwell on the plaza side, closest to Mount Royal. You'll learn where your favorite spot to hang out is (the library, obviously). You'll also know the time to the nearest coffee shop. With three Starbucks around the university, a Duncan Donuts on the bottom floor of the Varsity, TriBeCa on Charles Street, Shapiros on Preston Street, there's bound to be one within a 5 minute walk.
The best thing about a new school year is the amount of events involving free food. Browse the Welcome Week event calendar and line up your meals for the week. We're a bit partial to the free cupcakes in library on Wednesday, September 4, 3-4pm, on the second floor. What are you looking forward to this year?

Welcome back!
Welcome back! Today marks the beginning of the new semester,
and while recent arctic temperatures are forcing us to pull out our long
underwear and thick coats as we go into the Spring semester, there are new and
interesting happenings here at Langsdale. First up: Cupcakes! As always, the
library will be giving away free cupcakes to celebrate the new semester. We’ll
be giving away cupcakes on Wednesday, January 30, 3-4pm.
And while you’re getting a cupcake, take a look at the brand
new study area on the 3rd floor. During the Fall semester and the
Winter Break, we worked hard on moving books and furniture to expand usable student
space in the stacks. While we still have some work to do, we encourage you to
check out the new study area and feel free to spread out and get your work done
in a comfortable, quiet environment.
Don’t forget to stop by the Circulation desk before you
leave. Your library account should have been automatically renewed as long as
you are currently enrolled as a student, but you may have books still checked
out on your account. Renew your books at the Circulation desk, over the phone,
or even online, and start the Spring semester fresh. J

Let them Eat (Cup)Cake!
The Langsdale Library invites all UB students to a cupcake party on Wednesday September 8, 2010. From 3pm until the cupcakes run out. And these are not any ordinary cupcakes, the library is serving gourmet cupcakes, from the hugely popular Iced Gems Creations, a mobile bake shop that makes a long list of tempting dessert cupcakes such as Chocolate Lava, Caribbean Coconut, Key West...a key lime pie in a cupcake, and the Scarlet O'Hara, a raspberry red velvet cupcake!
There will be games with prizes, including a Barnes and Noble bookstore gift card, and a chance to pose for your very own READ poster. Yes, you can be the star of your own library promotional poster just like the ones you've seen with celebrities from movies, music and sports. And you might just see that poster in the library in the near future. You can bring your own book or browse through our Leisure Reading collection to find the perfect book to pose with.
So come visit the library and join us on the 2nd floor for free food and fun, Wednesday September 8th.
