Apply to Inspired Discoveries: Undergrad Symposium of Research & Creative Works

Apply now to present at the 9th annual Inspired Discoveries, a symposium of undergraduate research and creative works! One of Langsdale Library's missions is to recognize, encourage, and celebrate research and academic achievements.

Take this opportunity to share your hard work with the University of Baltimore community! Projects may include individual or collaborative research as well as creative works like video games or design projects. Presentations can take the form of

• Poster sessions
• Exhibits
• Panel presentations
• Presented papers

The best project in both areas will receive a $500 scholarship and their work will be submitted to UB's institutional repository.

Student applications are due by Friday, April 6th and must be accompanied by a faculty letter of recommendation. The event will be held on Friday, April 27th in the Learning Commons Town Hall.

RED Talks: Research Engagement Day

RED Talks, Research Engagement Day, is next Tuesday and Langsdale can't wait to celebrate the research and creative works of UB's faculty and graduate students!

RED Talks is an opportunity for faculty and graduate students to share their research with the UB Community through highly-focused 5 minute presentations. The program is now available online so you can learn more about their presentations and pick and choose which you want to attend.

Langsdale is gearing up for the Spring 2018 semester with FREE workshops for UB students! Langsdale's Achievement & Learning Center (ALC) offers around 200 workshops for the UB community every year. Whether you're looking for course preparation (happening now!), computer skills, or writing and communication--the ALC has it!

                  Do you find yourself looking for a place to study late night on campus to get ready for finals?  Are you looking for a one stop shop where you can get academic support?  If you answered yes to either of these then Final Finish is the event for you!  Don’t be a procrastinator this semester, come to this event and let it be the jumpstart you need to start your finals preparation. 

            On Wednesday, November 29^th Langsdale Library will stay open until 1:00am for the Final Finish event.  There will be writing consultants, tutors in many disciplines, academic coaches, and librarians to provide you with academic support as you prepare for your finals or final projects.  The event starts at 6:00pm which is when you can start dropping by to see any of the services listed above.   Writing consultants will be able to help you with all of your writing needs such as brainstorming, reviewing various drafts, help with structure, organization, punctuation, grammar, style, etc.  Be sure to bring any papers or outlines that you may need help with.  Tutors will be able to help you with content specific questions regarding your classes.  Be sure to bring your notes, textbooks, and any other class resources so that your tutor can best help you.  Academic coaches will be able to help you with time management techniques, studying strategies, setting goals, getting organized, etc.  Coaches can help you set your final exam and project study schedule so you will most likely to succeed.  The librarians will be able to assist you with your research needs.  They are knowledgeable about the databases and other resources available to UB students.

            If you are planning to attend this event it would be helpful to start thinking about what it is that you are trying to achieve with each service.  The more specific your questions are to the various service the better help you will receive, so help the consultants, tutors, coaches, and librarians help you by preparing before the event.  We hope to see you there!

                 

Free textbooks! What's not to like?

As every college student knows, textbooks are expensive!  The game is rigged: publishers are constantly releasing new editions of textbooks with only slight changes to the material, but if you don't buy the overpriced textbook, you're going to have a hard time passing the class.

Wouldn't it be great if textbooks were free and high-quality?  That's the premise behind the open textbook movement.  The Open Textbook Network, a large collection of colleges and universities including Ohio State and Penn State, is at the forefront in promoting the creation and use of open textbooks.  You can browse available textbooks in their Open Textbook Library.  Can't find a textbook that matches up with your class?  If you're a student, ask your professor to consider writing an open textbook for the class.  If you're a professor, consider writing an open textbook for your subject area.  Lots of students will thank you.

Upper-Division Writing Placement Test Preparation

Get tips and strategies to prepare for the Upper-Division Writing Placement Test. The test is required of all UB students registering for Practicum in Writing (WRIT 200) or Advanced Expository Writing (WRIT 300). You are allowed to take the test only once, and this free workshop will help you prepare.

Adobe Creative Cloud Basics

Explore Adobe Creative Cloud using the basic tools, panels, and functions of Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator. Learn about setting up, saving, and packaging documents appropriately and explore the functions and usability of each program.

Easily manipulate tables of information – contact lists, schedules, budgets, and more – for presentation and analysis. Learn to sort alphabetically, chronologically, large to small, etc.; use basic formulas to add, subtract, multiply, and divide; and format and print with headers, footers, and grid lines.

Perform more complex calculations in several tables. Create multi-step formulas and replicate patterns of numbers, dates, etc. without typing. Use pivot tables and functions to summarize your data (count, find average, and locate maximum and minimum values) and display your results in charts and graphs.

Langsdale is hosting trials for four Oxford University Press resources up until February 16. You can find them here, as well as on our Databases page. Check out the right hand column to see what's new or available for a limited time.

At Oxford Reference Online, you can find some of Oxford University Press' most well-known and visited titles from their Encyclopedias and Companions and from selected partner publishers' scholarly works.

Oxford African American Studies Center is the most comprehensive collection of over 10,000 scholarly articles that focus on the lives and events that shaped African American and African history and culture.

Oxford Bibliographies Online provides accurate and reliable resources on a variety of academic topics, written by academic experts, that guide faculty and students through the current scholarship.

Social Explorer is a demographic data visualization and research website that engages the public with society and science through dynamic maps and customizable reports.

Preparing for the Math Placement test? Achievement & Learning Services are prepared to help you review!

Writing Placement Test Prep

Registering for Practicum in Writing (WRIT 200) or Advanced Expository Writing (WRIT 300) next semester? The Upper-Division Writing Placement Test is required of all UB students registering for these courses.

Students are only allowed to take the test once, and this free workshop from Achievement & Learning Services will help you prepare. Dates range from March to May.

Tutors Needed

Interested in becoming a tutor? Achievement & Learning Services is looking to hire for the spring semester.

Being a tutor is a great opportunity to not only help your peers succeed, but to help you succeed academically as well. It looks great on a resume and comes with paid training. Achievement & Learning Services wants to see both tutors and tutees succeed, so we offer flexible hours, online tutoring, and pay 10$ an hour.

Currently, ALS is looking for tutors in Math and Statistics, but everyone is welcome to apply. The requirements to be a tutor include

• Took the class at UB
• Received a B+ or higher in the course
• Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher

APA Style Central Tutorials

Business, Psych, Criminal Justice, or any other APA major?

Don’t miss this opportunity to demo APA Style CENTRAL for free during the month of November. The ALC will be hosting a walk-in clinic for students and faculty to explore the program on Wednesday, Nov. 16 from 12 to 5:30 p.m. Langsdale has the official program for a 30 day trial and if you use APA, we want you to test yourself to improve your research and organizational skills.

The program operates around four centers: learning, writing, research, and publishing. Students are able to organize their research and writing in one central online location. Its word processor allows you to use several APA approved templates. It helps manage and create your reference sheet and citations. It can even search the APA PsychINFO database for citations.

The trial is only for 30 days, so don’t miss this opportunity to experience APA to the fullest.
